How to use the word counter

Count a draft

  1. Paste or type the complete text in the input area.
  2. Read the live word count first, followed by character and paragraph totals.
  3. Edit the text to update every value immediately.
  4. Use Copy counts when you need a plain-text summary.

What each count means

Words use the browser’s language-aware word segmenter. Letter and number sequences in Latin, CJK and other supported writing systems count as word-like segments; punctuation and standalone emoji do not count as words.

Characters are user-perceived Unicode grapheme clusters. A joined family emoji counts as one character instead of several UTF-16 code units. The main character total includes spaces, tabs and line breaks; the second character total excludes all whitespace.

Paragraphs are non-empty text blocks separated by one or more blank lines. A single line break inside a block does not begin another paragraph. This rule stays consistent across languages.

Examples

“Hello world” has 2 words and 11 characters including the space. “Hello 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦” treats the joined family emoji as one visible character.

“First line still first paragraph Second paragraph” has two paragraphs because only the blank line separates blocks.

Scope and differences

  • Word processors and publishing systems may use different rules for apostrophes, hyphens, CJK segmentation or paragraph marks. Use the counter required by the receiving system for contractual limits.
  • This page does not check grammar, originality, reading level or writing quality. It does not save drafts, upload files or send the entered text to a server.

Word counter FAQ

Why can another app show a different word count?

Word boundaries are conventions. This tool uses Intl.Segmenter for the selected page language, while another app may use its own dictionary or punctuation rules.

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes in Characters; no in Characters without whitespace. Tabs and line breaks follow the same distinction.

Does an emoji count once?

Extended grapheme clusters such as joined family emoji count as one visible character when the browser supports the Unicode segmentation standard.

Is my text stored?

No. Counts are calculated in this page and the input is not persisted or transmitted.
