How to compare text online

This browser-based diff tool is for writers, editors, developers, students, and anyone checking two versions of text. It marks literal changes; it does not decide whether statements mean the same thing or whether a document is legally correct.

Compare two versions

  1. Paste the earlier version into Original text.
  2. Paste the newer version into Changed text.
  3. Choose Lines for paragraph or code-line changes, or Words for smaller edits.
  4. Select Compare text and review red removals and green insertions.
  5. Copy the marked report or save it as a .txt file.

Example: a revised sentence

If the original says “The report is ready today” and the changed version says “The final report is ready tomorrow,” word mode marks “final” and “tomorrow” as insertions and “today” as a removal. Unchanged words stay unmarked so the edit is easy to scan.

Line mode or word mode?

Line mode treats every line, including its ending, as one comparison unit. It is useful for lists, configuration, code, and paragraphs that moved or changed. Word mode separates words, punctuation, and whitespace, which makes sentence-level edits more precise but creates more tokens.

Spaces and line breaks are significant

This tool performs an exact comparison. Two spaces are different from one, a tab is different from a space, and CRLF and LF line endings can appear as changes. Blank lines and a final newline are also preserved. Use this behavior when formatting matters; normalize the text first if formatting should be ignored.

Copying and saving the result

Copy diff creates a plain-text report. Line mode prefixes unchanged, removed, and inserted lines with two spaces, a minus sign, or a plus sign. Word mode wraps removals in [- -] and insertions in {+ +}. Save .txt downloads the same report; your original files are not uploaded.

Limits and common problems

  • Each input is limited to 100,000 characters.
  • Both sides together may contain at most 8,000 line or word tokens.
  • Very large texts with almost no matching content can exceed the browser work limit.
  • If word mode is too detailed, switch to line mode or compare smaller sections.

A red removal followed by a green insertion represents replacement. The tool checks literal text only; review context yourself before accepting an edit.
