Generate a SHA digest from UTF-8 text

Enter text, select SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512 and generate a lowercase hexadecimal digest with the browser Web Crypto API. Newlines and every Unicode character are part of the input.

How to generate a SHA hash

Create and compare a digest

  1. Enter or paste the exact text.
  2. Choose SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512.
  3. Select Generate hash.
  4. Copy the hexadecimal digest and compare it with the expected source.

Encoding and repeatability

Text is encoded as UTF-8 before hashing. The same sequence of characters produces the same digest; a different newline, space or normalization form can produce a different one.

The output is lowercase hexadecimal. SHA-256 has 64 hex characters, SHA-384 has 96 and SHA-512 has 128.

Security limits

  • A hash is not encryption and cannot be decrypted. This page offers no cracking or reversal feature.
  • A fast SHA digest alone is not suitable password storage; use a dedicated password-hashing scheme with salts and work factors. MD5 and SHA-1 are intentionally excluded.

SHA hash FAQ

Is my text uploaded?

No. Web Crypto runs in this browser and this page makes no input request to a server.

Why did one extra line change the hash?

Hash functions process every encoded byte, including CR, LF and spaces.

Can I recover the original text?

No. A digest is one-way; this tool does not provide reversal or guessing.
