How to create an APA 7 citation

Start with Paste text: add one source, a whole list, or an existing citation and press Generate APA 7. BibTeX and RIS are detected automatically; separate plain-text sources with a blank line. To write a citation from scratch, choose Enter details, then Book, Journal article or Webpage.

Enter authors and title, then year and publisher, journal or website. Use Family, Given and semicolons between people; enclose an organization in braces. Leave the author or year empty only when the source does not provide it. More details opens a separate editor for volume, issue, pages, dates, edition, DOI and URL; Done returns to the main form. Webpage URLs stay in the main form. Add source creates another entry; the arrow buttons move between entries without stacking forms.

What the output includes

The reference list appears first. Parenthetical citations such as (Sapolsky, 2017) and narrative citations such as Sapolsky (2017) appear below it. All three forms are visible together, each with its own copy button.

Book and webpage titles are italicized, as are journal names and volume numbers. The English APA 7 conventions remain the same in every interface language, including month names and n.d. for an unknown date. Identical author lists in the same year receive a, b and later suffixes by title order. References list up to 20 authors; with 21 or more, they show the first 19, an ellipsis and the last author.

Bring existing information into the form

Paste is optional. BibTeX supports @book, @article, @online, @www and @misc (the last three map to webpages). Use brace-delimited entries with literal braced, quoted or numeric values. Nested braces, common escaped punctuation and multiple authors separated by “and” are supported. Macros, concatenation, cross-references, editor-only works and TeX commands are not expanded. Unmapped field names and the original remain visible.

RIS supports BOOK, JOUR and ELEC records with TY and ER markers, AU/A1 authors, TI/T1 titles, PY/Y1 dates, JO/JF/T2 journals, PB publishers, VL/IS volume and issue, SP/EP pages, ET edition, DO DOI and UR URL. Standard tag lines use two spaces before the hyphen. Unknown types are left unselected, not guessed as books.

Paste text handles both batches and conversion of supported author–date or single-author MLA patterns. Generate first, then choose Edit sources to change extracted fields. An incomplete item opens its missing field; the original remains in More details. Unsupported prose still needs manual entry.

Copying, missing details and limits

Each result has its own copy buttons below it. Plain text does not retain italics or superscript; apply these in your document.

A missing year becomes n.d.; a missing author moves the title to the first position. Supply a title and a publisher or journal for those types, and a URL for webpages. Missing volume, issue or pages can be left empty only when your source does not have them. Include an edition as 2nd ed. rather than another title. The title is never automatically lowercased, so check its capitalization.

Does this verify that a source exists?

No. The tool formats the information you supply. It does not search papers, resolve DOI links or verify authorship, publication facts or originality. All entries remain in the current browser tab and are lost when it is closed or reloaded; save your text first.

Which cases need manual adjustment?

This formatter covers whole authored books, ordinary journal articles and dated or undated webpages. Edited volumes, chapters, translations, advance online publications, retrieval dates for changing pages, suffixes in personal names and citation ambiguities between different author groups need manual APA guidance. If two different groups would shorten to the same et al. citation, expand the names in your document. No citation style other than APA 7 is generated.
